Abavanan sentenced to six months imprisonment
Abavanan who had a brought a new trend to Tamil cinema is in deep waters now. The VII metropolitan magistrate at George Town, Ravi, sentenced Abavanan to undergo simple imprisonment for six months since he was found guilty in a cheque-bouncing case. Prema Varadarajulu of Santhome had filed a petition in the court that that Abavanan was staying as a tenant at her Besant Nagar house, paying a monthly rent of Rs 26,000. In 2005, after having failed to pay rent for about two years, the director gave her a cheque Rs 3.16 lakh in November 2005.
As the cheque was returned for want of sufficient funds, the complainant contacted Abavanan and intimated him about the return of the cheque. She said he did not respond properly to the communication. However the magistrate suspended the sentence till August 11, enabling the director to prefer an appeal. A fine of Rs 5,000 has been imposed on Abavanan.
