AOL into Indian Market
AOL has launched Hindi and Tamil versions of the AOL India portal last week. The AOL India portal offers e-mail, instant messaging, news, sports and entertainment. The Hindi and Tamil portals will have language sections in news, cinema and astrology. The portal’s content channels in two major Indian languages come at a time when the online audience in India is skyrocketing. The number of Internet users in urban India has grown by 28 per cent over the past year. About 60 per cent of all active online Indians - 30 million - prefer to read in local languages, the statement said.
AOL’s Truveo video search engine has also been launched in India. Truveo makes it easier to search relevant videos that are popular across categories in India — such as cricket, films, music and news. AOL (formerly America Online) runs one of America’s largest Internet access businesses and is a subsidiary of Time Warner. It is based in Dulles, Virginia. AOL India, based in Bangalore, is run by AOL Global Operations of Dublin, Ireland.
