Gopi’s portrayal of a villager in the film ‘Kodiyettam’ in 1977 won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. He was also awarded the Padma Sri in 1991. People from all walks of life, including leading politicians and cine stars, reached the homes of the two to pay their last respects.

Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan made it a point to visit both the homes. Actor Mammootty told that he had taken a day off from his shooting in Tamil Nadu to pay his respects to Gopi.
