Manipuri Cinema after 11 Years in IFFI

After 11 years of silence, Manipuri cinema has come alive again with the entry of Makhonmani Mongsaba’s Manipuri feature film Yenning Amadi Likla in the feature film section of the Indian Panorama of the International Festival of India (IFFI) 2007. The last Manipuri film entered in the feature film section of Indian Panorama of IFFI was Shyam Sharma’s Sanabi (The frey mare) in 1996.

Makhonmani Mongsaba’s 154-minute film is among 21 selected feature films. Aribam Syam Sharma’s 58-minute documentary Rajarshi Bhagyachandra of Manipur and Haobam Paban Kumar’s 19-minute short fiction film Ngaihak Lambida (Along the way) are among 15 selected non-feature films. Selections were made out of 119 feature films and149 non-feature films. A list of 21 feature films and 15 non-feature films have been selected for the Indian Panorama of the International Festival of India 2007 to be held in Goa from 23 November to 3 December. Film bazaar: Alongside the IFFI, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) will be organising the Film Bazaar from 24 to 26 November. The Film Bazaar is aimed at providing an interactive platform between prospective buyers and sellers of film rights from India and abroad. The international participants, among others, for the Film Bazaar are, Global Film Initiative, Back Up Films, Onoma International, Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, Shanghai Film Group, China Film Co-production, Arclight Films Malaysian Broadcasting Corporation, Astra and Miriam Arab of Cannes Market.

Sales agents and financiers including Fortissimo Films and Paris-based Memento Films, and Germany’s Pandora are set to attend the three-day event. As part of the Film Bazaar, 15 pre-selected projects drawn from all over India will be presented to the participants. These projects are at different stages of development. The NFDC is also organizing a script development workshop which is scheduled to begin in Goa on Sunday as a run up to the IFFI. The workshop pairs six mentors with the writers of eight pre-selected screenplays. Danis Tanovic, Bernd Lichtenberg and Olivia Hetreed are among the high-profile writers who will mentor eight students.
