An embodiment of perfect film is all we have got to say about Dasavatharam. Put down the controversies and hurdles that this flick faced and today it makes up for all. Blending science and spirituality and of course the unforgettable disaster Tsunami together, this is an awesome movie delivered by K.S.Ravikumar and Kamal Haasan. For sure, it looks like the core of Dasavatharam bloomed up with Kamal Haasan on the day of Tsunami that had hit before four years.
If 10 Avatars were ideated by Kamal Haasan, Director K.S.Ravikumar has well executed these characters weaving relationship between each of them. Each and every character on screen has something to do more crucial throughout 3 hours of spine chilling thriller.
In simple, Dasavatharam is about a God’s statue that weaves a network between 10 characters played by Kamal Haasan…
The film opens with Govindarajan (Kamal Haasan), a scientist from NASA addressing a huge crowd at Nehru Stadium where Chief Minister Karunanidhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and American President George Bush seated as chief guests. In his speech, Govindarajan speaks about the history of a statue that has passed through many ages carrying supernatural power. Immediately, with no fraction of seconds you are taken back to 12th century where Raja Nambi (Kamal Haasan) wildly attacks his king’s soldiers removing a God’s statue from the temple. Enraged King Raja Kulothunga (Napoleon) has Raja Nambi tied to the statue and thrown into the sea.
Straight off to the 21st Century, the scene starts with December 20, 2004 where Govindaraju aka Govind (Kamal Haasan) is shown formulating a biological weapon at NASA. But situations are tougher, when the weapon goes high in demand and people are right behind to grab it… The tale further moves about for other 4 days where 9 different characters encounter each other.
Grandeur indeed, the film has the best fascinating treat for the audiences who yearned to watch this flick for over many days. We are sure that Dasavatharam is sure to take Tamil cinema couple of steps ahead. If Kamal Haasan as Raja Nambi makes your emotions raised, for laughter you have CBI Naidu trickling your ribs with his laughter elements. Of course, this character travels right throughout the film and even the Hit Man on negative (again played by Kamal Haasan) does the same.
Excellence is more witnessed with the character of American President George Bush. Not alone about his makeover we are speaking about, but his very attributes of unknowledgeable personality makes whole lot of sense and this is real piece of neat work for those who are well versed the real man of United States.
The foolish conversations like ‘What is NACL?” is really throwing us all hitting the floors with intellectual comedy tracks.
Despite playing dual roles in the film, Asin hasn’t got much to do on her part, but her works are really outstanding and in particular her enunciating the Brahmin style is really mind blowing. Malikka Sherawat with an item number and few series of sequences perform equally well on the pars.
Well, its really breathtaking to see that Tsunami and a simple Statue have been rendered with powerful roles in this film. Technical aspects takes you all far behind your imagination, but graphic works are really unwanted for the moment. Cinematographer Ravi Varman for no specified reason keeps moving the camera up and down.
When it comes to Himesh Reshamiya and Devi Sri Prasad, both these buddies have rocked with splendid musical scores. ‘Oh Oh Sanam’ sang by Kamal Haasan is really good since it carries a good message. Devi Sri Prasad with his background scoring alone enhances the visual quality.
As a whole, things that make us sing appraisals of Dasavatharam are a grandeur work of Kamal Haasan and K.S. Ravi Kumar. But, will this flick hit the bull’s eyes among the front benchers is a big question.
Bottom - Line: Master of Tamil Cinema

kamal hassan is a super super hero, his film dasavartharam will be double hit.
I 100% accept your review. The film could have been better. Ten roles are not necessary for this film. It is only made to break the legend(Actor Sivaji) history. It is not good for Indian cinema.
Just saw the first day first show in madurai jaya theater. Really its a hard word work by kamalhassan. if someone in india who is eligable for oscar award means, no doubt it should be kamal. you cant find any resemblance among the ten roles he played and each role is having different body language and gesture, and voice modulation. really everyone should appreciate him for making tamil industry better than bollywood in india. Really great.

Even Kamal’s ten avatar can’t save the film. Oscar poor fellow (after Dasa)! I feel for you. You have actually wasted your money for this film by which Kamal only has been credited. Kamal always takes such risks with others production. When it comes to his own production he plays safe. He again proved that he is a cunning fellow. But this film in no way can match Indian or Nayagan. I feel Sorry for kamal fans. Atleast save kamal by being Mad fans.

Im a Kamal fan who was trackin down this movie from the beginning of its announcement. Was abit dissapointed though. If the story was handed over to a class Director..could have been excellent. KS.RAVI, too bad he’s only good for masala stories. Dasavatharam is actually a strong story which landed up being a masala one. So will this movie will be a hit?? Time will tell.. But as quality wise.. its better than SIVAJI. I mean they were saying “GRAND” “GRAND” all the while in the end.. only the song settings were grand.. Other than that.. nothing..

Watched it in Toronto on June 13th. I’m a great Kamal fan. Was awesome to see that the theatre was “house full”. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. After the first scene, it felt like it was a little boring with kamal as scientist, but soon picked up the heat when fletcher arrived and from then on, it was no looking back. Great job done by kamal and the team. Lovely songs.
Definitely going to watch it again. telugu kamal is the best hit with comedy. Had he not been there, film would have seemed too serious.Hope this movie runs well.
Kamal has given some serious good movies like anbe shivam, needless to say people always had to comment even bad about that movie. For critics, it is always a rajini/kamal stuff and they make sure they watch it and write bad reviews.
If one cannot see the make up effort with multiple personalities, then please don’t watch this movie and criticize.

Asin’s Dialogue are irritating. I don’t think 10 avatar is not necessary for the film. If they just concentrate of “poovaragavan” and “naidu”, the film would be mega hit. I think, the fate of the film is in “hard-core” kamal fans. I feel very sorry for “Oscar Ravi”. Hope he is alright few days from now.
Whenever kamal film released there are people to show their bad comments before seeing the film at all. Kamal’s film only can be critized as that will have lots of work and activities. I didn’t see his latest film dasavatharam but i am sure he is a excellent actor and he will show his best action. Anbe sivam was a fantastic movie but it was not hit as much expected. why? people have to think……….

One thing we had noticed is why people didnt get the real subtext and reason for the various roles and hence the title.
If you knew the real dasavatharams of Lord Vishnu and their characters you can appreciate the script more. Let me explain, starting with the best adapted role:
1. Krishna avatar - Vincent Poovaraghavan
Lord krishna is actually a dalit, he is dark-skinned [shyamalam]. He saved draupadi when she was being violated and he was the actual diplomat in mahabharatham. Lord krishna dies of an arrow striking his lower leg. Now look at how vincent was introduced.. he appears when asin is about to be molested and he saves her like draupadi. Vincent is the dalit diplomat, fights for land issue [soil issue to be exact] and dies from the metal rod striking his leg. Oh even five of vincent’s men are drugged at P. Vasu’s.. sounds familiar???
2. Balarama avatar - Balarama naidu
This is an easy given. as the name suggests and the role personifies you can easily get it.
3. Mathsya avatar - Ranagaraja nambi
nambi is thrown into water in an act of trying to save lord from being thrown into sea, though vainly. what more clue do you want?
4. Varaha avatar - Krishnaveni paatti
During the mukunda song, krishnaveni paatti does varaha avatar in the shadow puppetry. The frame freezes on it for a second. there is the clue. Moreover, in varaha avatar lord actually hides earth so as to protect life forms. Here too krishnaveni hides the germs - life form inside the statue so as to protect.
5. Vamana avatar - Kalifulla khan
remember in vamana avatar, lord vishnu takes the vishvaroopa, that is the giant form! Hence the giant kalifulla here symbolises vamana avatar.
6. Parasurama avatar - Christian Fletcher
Parasurama is actually on an angry killing spree and killed 21 generations of the particular kshatriya vamsa. Hence the real KILLER… Guess what thats what our Fletcher is! He comes around with the gun [modern upgrade for axe] and kills everyone around. I have to check if he kills 21 people though. :-D
7. Narasimha avatar - Shingen Narahashi
first of all the name itself is a play on the words singam [means lion in tamil] and narasimha [the avatar being symbolised]. Lord Narasimha manifests himelf to kill the bad guy and he also teaches prahaladha. In the movie, he shows up to kill the killer fletcher! and is also a teacher.. Lord Narasimha had to kill the asura with bare hands and hence the martial arts exponent here.. get it?
8. Rama avatar - Avatar Singh
Lord Rama stands for the one man one woman maxim, kind of symbolising true love.. Here Avatar portrays that spirit by saying that he loves his woman more than anything and wants to live for her.
9. Kalki avatar - Govindaraj Ramasamy
As you know, the hero in kaliyug can be none other than the Kalki avatar!!!
10. Koorma avatar - Bush
This is the most loose adaptation I couldn’t clearly comprehend. But if you look at the real koorma avatar, the lord is the turtle/tortoise that helps in stirring the ksheera sagara and bringing out the amruth. This essentially creates war among the devas and asuras. Similarly today Bush facilitates war between you know whom… May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise…

I got little boring in the middle of film.Specialy Kamal and Asin combination scene, but Kamal did another best performance.
I liked smart and best role as Christian Fletcher and comedy role as Balarama naidu.

krishnaveni patti was excellent. just cant stop thinking of this movie since last friday. watched it 5 times already. still not satisfied. going again! and again! and again! i wonder how The Great One could do such performances. nedds take care of his diet, sleep, energy level etc. also check out on his body structure. for every character the structure changes. it’s difficult. was so proud to see a tamil movie of this level.

Only disappointment in the film is Asin…
She is irritating in the second half……….
This kinda movie doesn’t require heroine…i think so….
She is reducing the interest in the movie…….
But the first half is really mind-blowing…..
Balaram Naidu’s Comedy is really hilarious……..
The Narration of the film is so excitement as it unfolds….
Christian Fletcher is Really Rocking as a Villain…….
And Japan Man,Krishna veni Patti,George Bush Make ups are really astonishing & mindblowing………
Michael Westmore,has handled the make up department very well.
It would be an uphill task in understanding Dasavatharam if one does not pay adequate attention to all Scenes…..
So Watch the Movie without missing any scenes….Surely it will entertain u…….

It’s all kamal in the flim.NOTHING else.Every one have to accept that the screenplay is slow and it does not have any TWIST in IT.when you can have a clear view on the subject of chemistry.and know what is NACL .then you will the expected screenplay..in such a case the director does not have a innovative script.Ullaganayagan has failed in some plot of the screenplay especially “HOW DOES KAMAL AND ASIN GET INTO THE TRAIN”when the bad guy is chasing them ????? HOW DOES THE BAD GUY ESCAPES WHEN THE POLICE HAS COVERED HIM???ITS ALL REMINDS A BIG QUESTION..ASIN is simply IRRITATING and she resembles KOVAI SARALA FROM VISVANATHAN AND RAMAMURTHY.she creeps in most of the scenes.her character has not been furnished well.The camra is one of the comendable aspects in the flim.The character of RAO resembles BALAYYA{THE OLD ACTOR}…ESPEC in the dialogue delivery..the bad guy character AND the japaneese character is OUTSTANDING.the 7 feet tall character and the singh character is simply waste.they have nothing to do with the story.ALL other roles has a good effect in the flim.RUNNING AND CHASING IS IN THE FLIM…IF YOU TAKE THE CHASING SCENES FROM THE FLIM..YOU WILL FIND NOTHING IN THE FLIM…INSPITE OF ALL THESE NEGATIVE ASPECTS YOU CAN WATCH KAMAL ALLWAYS IN THE SCREEN WHICH MAKES YOU TO THINK ABOUT THE CH WHICH CAHARACTER HE IS DOING AND MAKES YOU TO THINK AFTER THE FLIM COMPLETION.There lies the success of ULLAGANAYAGAN..NOTHING ELSE IN THE MOVIE..Not to believe in the above review..
In Middle East, they don’t show the first avathaar. I could see only 9 avathaars. I think almost all characters do not show expression in their face, due to the mask. Anybody can play these roles. ‘Poovaraagan’, ‘Bush’, ‘Fletcher’,'Kalifulla Khan’ etc. seem to be comic characters with over makeup. Only Balaram Naidu seems to be impressing. However, there is no proper story. When one compares this film with ‘Avvai Shanmugi’ or ‘Apoorva Sagotharargal’ or ‘Mickel Madana Kaamarajan’, this film is NOTHING. We can watch this movie only for some graphical work. I think Kamal should do such movies with his own money rather than dumping producers like Aascar or Aalavanthaan producer.
Saw Dasavatharam. Kamal’s acting is superb and really taken lot of effort. But other than that what else in this movie. Can Kamal explain Chaos theory and Butterfly theory?

What is the use of coming up with TEN different roles when most of the roles look so artificial?!!!
Fletcher, Bush, old lady, tall muslim man - all look so over made up and fake.
Even the computer CGI looks so cheap and ‘cartoon’ like in most of the scenes.
Kamal seems to have done this just to beat Sivaji Ganesan’s record of nine characters, nothing else.
Kamal, if you are reading this, please remember, it is the quality of your character, not the quantity that counts.
Your latest movie will never come near your golden classics like Nayagan and Mahanadhi.
